Companies are using data generated from loyalty programmes to improve their understanding of customer preferences, I found an interesting article which discusses the use of data analytics (see below).

Big data analytics is beginning to  transform business operations and strategy, I have recently realised  that organizations are increasingly being shaped by advances in software.
