10 Approaches That May Shape the Future of E-Commerce

A recent post on Smallbiztrends.com identified 10 approaches that have the potential to shape the future of ecommerce. After reviewing the list I felt it was worth sharing because in the evolving field of ecommerce these are all major trends that have the capacity to affect ecommerce growth.

Without further ado here are 10 factors that may shape the future of ecommerce:

1) Online Store Upgradation

A give-in in any field, with new technologies consistently being developed online store fronts are constantly changing to improve the customer experience. Changes in aesthetics and inviting users to provide more feedback are just a few ways the online stores are upgrading.

2) Re-Marketing
Instead of trying to reach out to a completely new clientele, re-marketing is a technique that encourages companies to reach out to potential customers that have already viewed their site. It's about enticing shoppers to return and make a purchase through your website.

3) Personalization
In addition to making consumers feel special and letting them know that their business is important to you, this is a great way to collect data about your customers.

4) Cross-channel integration
In my opinion this is the approach that will most likely have the greatest influence on the future of ecommerce. Consumers are reaching a point where they expect all retail channels to seamlessly work together in order to provide them with the best shopping experience, and a push toward omni-channel retail will reflect that is necessary to exist more than just online or physically.

5) M-commerce
Mobile commerce is expanding immensely and will definitely have some sort of impact on the e-commerce market. While what consumers are doing with various mobile technologies varies from customer to customer (showrooming, making the final purchase, etc), it's clear that the smartphone epidemic will have some sort of influence on the future of e-commerce.

6) Scalability
Quite simply, companies need to be prepared for growth. Online retailers need to be prepared to handle an expanding number of orders and effectively manage an expanding amount of work.

7) Interactive Product Display Will Replace Images
More and more retailers are finding that consumers need more than just an image to sell them on a particular product. Retailers are turning to demonstration videos to compensate for the fact that online retail does not allow consumers to physically touch or see a product in action.

8 ) Shipping differentiation
Many brands are currently not handling the post-transaction process efficiently. Once the product leaves their warehouse it almost appears as though it's out of sight, out of mind. A new focus on end-to-end fulfillment will affect the future of ecommerce.

9) Adding a human element that sells
Making a purchase online leads to a disconnect between the consumer and the store because there's no interaction with a person, only a computer. Looking for ways to create a similar interaction online is something that could definitely influence the future of e-commerce.

10) Online Loyalty
Customer loyalty is not something to be taken for granted or underestimated. By working with customers who've already made a purchase from your site in the past, if they had a positive experience it's likely that they'll be interested in shopping on your site again in the future. Offering incentives will entice their return, and remind them that you appreciate their business, ultimately keeping them coming back for more.
